Tradies are some of the hardest-working business owners in the country. Long hours, demanding clients, and the constant juggling of jobs leave little time for anything else — especially marketing. Most are too busy getting through the day to think about business growth. But not having a marketing plan is precisely why many good tradies are underpaid, stuck working for less than they’re worth, and never building a business they can eventually sell.
The good news: effective marketing doesn’t require a big budget or a marketing department. It requires clarity about who you’re trying to reach and consistency in how you show up.
Get Clear on Who Your Best Clients Are
Before spending any time or money on marketing, know who you actually want to work for. Your best clients are the ones who pay on time, respect your time, refer others, and let you do quality work without constant interference. Write down three to five clients who fit this description. What do they have in common? Where do they live, what do they value, and how did they find you? That profile is your marketing target.
Your Google Business Profile Is Free and Powerful
Many tradies have never claimed their Google Business Profile — or have claimed it but not optimised it. This is the most valuable free marketing asset available to a local tradie. A complete profile with photos, your service areas, categories set correctly, and regular review responses will get you showing up when people nearby search for your trade. Ask every satisfied client to leave a Google review. Don’t overthink it — just ask.
Word of Mouth Doesn’t Scale Itself
Referrals are the best leads, but word of mouth is passive. Make it active. After every job, send a short message thanking the client and asking if they know anyone else who might need your services. Create a simple referral incentive — a discount on their next job, or a gift card — for clients who send you a paying customer. Systems turn luck into repeatability.
Show Your Work
Take before and after photos on every job. This takes three minutes and creates a library of content you can use on social media, your website, and in quotes to new clients. People buy from tradies they trust, and seeing real work from real jobs in real New Zealand homes builds that trust faster than any description of your services.
One Platform, Done Well
You don’t need to be on every social media platform. Pick one — Facebook and Instagram work well for most trades — and post consistently once or twice a week. A before-and-after photo with a brief description of the job and your location is enough. Consistency matters more than perfection. A tradie who posts regularly with genuine work will outperform one who posts a polished campaign twice a year.
