Solar energy is growing fast in New Zealand, and the economics have improved significantly in recent years. With power prices continuing to rise and panel costs falling, more Kiwis are finding that solar makes financial sense — not just environmental sense. Here’s what you need to know before getting quotes.
Is Your Home Suitable?
The most important factor is your roof’s orientation and shade exposure. North-facing roofs in New Zealand receive the most sun and will generate the most electricity. East and west-facing roofs still work, but generate roughly 15-20% less power than a north-facing equivalent. South-facing roofs are generally not viable for solar in New Zealand.
Shade is the other critical variable. Trees, neighbouring buildings, or roof structures that cast shadows on your panels during peak sun hours significantly reduce output. A good solar installer will assess your site and provide shade modelling before quoting.
New Zealand gets more sunshine than many people realise. Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch all receive comparable or more sunshine hours than parts of the UK and Germany — countries with far higher solar adoption rates.
How Much Does It Cost?
A typical residential solar system in New Zealand (6-10 kW) currently costs between $12,000 and $20,000 installed, depending on system size, panel brand, and whether a battery is included. Battery storage adds $8,000-$15,000 but allows you to use your solar power at night and reduces grid dependence significantly.
Most households without a battery can expect payback periods of 7-12 years. With a battery, it’s typically 10-15 years. These figures improve as power prices rise, which they consistently do in New Zealand.
What to Look For in a Installer
Solar installation is a regulated electrical trade in New Zealand. Your installer must hold an Electrical Worker’s Licence and be authorised to do grid-connect work. Look for members of the Solar Energy Association of New Zealand (SEANZ) and check that the equipment being quoted carries a meaningful warranty — panels typically 25 years, inverters 10-15 years.
Get at least three quotes and make sure they’re comparing equivalent system sizes and components. The cheapest quote is not always the best value if it involves lower-quality equipment or an installer without a solid local track record.
Grid Export and Buy-Back Rates
When your system generates more power than you’re using, the surplus is exported to the grid and your retailer pays you a buy-back rate. These rates vary by retailer and are generally lower than the retail price you pay for power — typically 8-14 cents per kWh versus 30+ cents to buy. This means the best financial return comes from using your solar power directly rather than exporting it, which is an argument for shifting energy-intensive tasks (dishwasher, washing machine, EV charging) to the middle of the day.
