Solar photovoltaic (PV) installation has grown rapidly in New Zealand, driven by falling panel costs, rising electricity prices, and growing awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of self-generation. The residential solar market — rooftop systems for homes — is the largest segment, while commercial and industrial solar installation is growing as businesses respond to energy cost pressures.
The Solar Installation Market
Solar PV installation in New Zealand is carried out by specialist solar installers (often licensed electricians with additional solar-specific training) and increasingly by general electrical contractors who have added solar to their service offering. The technical aspects of solar installation — panel selection, string inverter or microinverter configuration, battery integration, grid connection and metering — require specific training beyond general electrical competency.
The regulatory framework for solar in New Zealand includes Electricity Authority grid connection requirements, council building consent requirements for roof-mounted systems above certain sizes, and the specific safety requirements for DC electrical systems operating at potentially dangerous voltages. Installers need to be familiar with these requirements and ensure their installations comply.
Battery Storage
Battery storage systems — connecting a battery bank to a solar system to allow solar energy to be used after sundown — are increasingly affordable and are being added to both new solar installations and existing systems. Battery installation requires the same electrical competencies as solar, plus specific training in battery management systems, safety requirements for lithium battery installations, and the increasingly sophisticated energy management software that optimises when batteries charge and discharge.
