Social Media for Tradies: How to Grow Your NZ Business Without Wasting Time on It

Share Article

It might seem odd to say that social media is essential for the hard-hatted world of trades and contracting. But the reality is that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok have become significant sources of new business for tradespeople — and the ones ignoring them are giving up ground to competitors who aren’t.

The key is not to do more. It’s to do a small number of things consistently and well.

Where Your Clients Are Looking

When someone needs a tradie, their first move is often still a Google search or a referral from a friend. But the next step — checking that tradie out before calling — increasingly involves looking at their Facebook page, their Instagram feed, or their Google Business Profile. What they find (or don’t find) shapes whether they call.

A tradie with no social presence, or one with a Facebook page last updated in 2021, is losing work to a competitor who regularly posts photos of their jobs. This is true even for excellent tradespeople — perception matters, and an active, professional-looking social presence communicates that a business is current, trustworthy, and takes pride in its work.

The Before-and-After Formula

The most effective social media content for trades businesses is simple: before-and-after job photos with a brief caption explaining what was done. This requires no copywriting skill, no graphic design, and no marketing strategy. Take a photo when you arrive. Take a photo when you leave. Post them together with three sentences about the job and your location.

Done twice a week, this builds a portfolio of real work that potential clients can scroll through. It also improves your visibility in local search results over time, as social media activity signals that your business is active.

Which Platform?

Choose one and do it well rather than being mediocre on three. For residential trades — plumbers, electricians, builders, painters — Facebook and Instagram work best because they reach homeowners directly. For commercial or infrastructure work, LinkedIn can be more relevant. TikTok is growing quickly for trades that can create engaging process or educational content, but it requires more effort.

Engagement Matters More Than Followers

A tradie with 400 followers who regularly get comments and shares will generate more business than one with 4,000 followers who gets no interaction. Engage with comments, respond to messages promptly, and show the personality behind the business. People hire people, not companies — and social media is where that personality can show.

Set a Realistic Commitment

Two posts per week, 15 minutes each, is achievable for almost any busy tradie. Set a reminder, take the before-and-after photos habitually on every job, and batch your posting once a week. Consistency over 6-12 months produces results that sporadic bursts of activity never will.
