SEO for Tradies: How to Get Found Online Without Getting Lost in the Jargon

Share Article

Search engine optimisation sounds technical, and the industry around it has a habit of making it sound more complicated than it needs to be. For a tradie running a local business, the fundamentals of SEO are actually straightforward — and getting them right can be the difference between a phone that rings and one that doesn’t.

What SEO Actually Does

When someone in your area types “plumber Hastings” or “roof repairs Wellington” into Google, the results they see are shaped by SEO. Google is trying to show the most relevant, trustworthy results for each search. Your job is to give Google the signals it needs to decide that your business is the right answer for people searching for what you do, where you are.

For a local tradie, this means three things: making sure Google knows what you do, making sure Google knows where you are, and giving Google reasons to trust you over your competitors.

Your Google Business Profile: Do This First

If you do nothing else for your online presence, claim and complete your Google Business Profile. It’s free, it’s the single biggest driver of local search visibility for service businesses, and most tradies have either not set it up or set it up poorly.

Complete every section: business name, categories (be specific — “plumber” is better than “home services”), service areas, business hours, and a description that uses the words your customers search for. Add photos of your work. Respond to every review, positive or negative. Ask satisfied clients to leave reviews — Google reviews are a direct ranking factor in local search.

Your Website: The Basics

Your website should include: a clear description of what you do and where you operate; a page for each main service (one page for “bathroom renovations” and a separate page for “kitchen renovations” is better than lumping everything together); your suburb and city name in the text (Google needs to know where you are); and a mobile-friendly design (most of your potential clients will visit on a phone).

Page titles and headings matter — use the words people actually search for. “Auckland electrician — residential and commercial” is more effective than “quality electrical services in the city of sails.”

Local Directories: Free Listings That Add Up

Make sure your business is listed consistently on the major NZ directories: Finda, Yellow, Localist, and any trade-specific directories relevant to your sector (e.g., the Master Plumbers directory for plumbers, the NZCB directory for certified builders). Consistent name, address, and phone number across all platforms helps Google confirm your business details are accurate.

None of this is fast. SEO builds over months, not days. But the cumulative effect of doing the basics well — Google Business Profile, a functional website, consistent local listings, and regular reviews — is significant for a local trades business.
