Remote builds need an offline information plan

Keep remote building projects moving with usable offline drawings, clear communication arrangements and a reliable record of site decisions.

A rural job can be well organised in the office and surprisingly difficult to coordinate at the gate. Drawings live in the cloud, the delivery driver has a map pin and the foreman has everyone’s number. Then the mobile signal disappears. The practical question is what the team can still do without a connection.

Make the essentials available on site

Before mobilisation, agree which information must be accessible offline: the current drawing set, specifications for the work being done, emergency arrangements, key contacts and delivery directions. Give that pack an issue date and an owner. A saved document is useful only if people can tell whether it is current. Keep superseded copies out of the working folder rather than leaving several almost identical versions for the crew to interpret.

Separate routine updates from urgent contact

A daily update can wait for a connection; a critical safety call cannot. Establish communications arrangements appropriate to the location and work, including how the team will raise an alarm and direct responders to the right entrance. Check the actual site, not just a coverage map. Ask visiting trades and drivers what they need before they lose reception, and give them instructions in a format they can retain.

Close the information loop

Offline working creates a second risk: decisions made on site may never reach the central record. Nominate who will upload marked-up drawings, progress notes and agreed changes when connectivity returns. Use a short end-of-day check to reconcile what changed and who needs to know. This is particularly valuable when different trades attend on different days. The aim is a simple, dependable routine that works on an ordinary phone, with a practical backup when that phone cannot connect.
