The New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) Apprentice Challenge is returning for 2025, with BCITO — New Zealand’s leading building and construction apprenticeship provider — joining as the new major sponsor. The competition celebrates emerging talent in the construction sector and puts carpentry skills to the test in a pressured, timed environment.

How the Competition Works
Apprentices compete in regional heats held across New Zealand in April, with each contestant building a project over six hours to demonstrate their carpentry ability. The winners from each regional heat advance to the national final, held at the NZCB Conference in Hamilton in June, where prizes of up to $10,000 are on offer.
The competition format is designed to reflect real-world conditions: a challenging brief, a tight timeline, and the pressure of being assessed. It rewards not just technical skill but also planning, problem-solving, and efficient use of time — competencies that matter on the job site.
