Why Drawing Reading Matters
Structural drawings are the translation of an engineer’s design into the instructions for what to build. Builders who can read structural drawings accurately and completely build what the engineer designed. Those who misread or ignore structural drawings build something else — which may not meet the Building Code, may not perform as intended in an earthquake, and which creates liability for everyone involved.
Reading structural drawings is a skill that develops with practice, but there are fundamentals that every builder can learn — and that make the difference between confident interpretation and guesswork.
The Drawing Set
A structural drawing set typically includes: a general arrangement plan showing the overall structure; foundation plans; floor framing plans; roof structure plans; elevation sections; and connection details. The details are the most important part — they show exactly how individual elements are connected, what fixings are used, and how forces transfer between structural members.
Always check the revision status of the drawings before building. Engineering drawings go through multiple revisions as the design is developed and reviewed, and building from a superseded revision is a serious error. The current revision is shown on the title block and the revision history panel on the drawing.
Notation and Symbols
Structural drawings use standard notation and symbols that represent reinforcing bars, timber members, steel sections, and connection types. Rebar notation — for example, 2-HD16 means two deformed bars of 16mm diameter — is standard across the industry. Timber notation describes species and grade as well as member size. Steel sections are described by their profile (UB, UC, RHS, SHS, CHS) and size. Learning these notations is the essential starting point for reading structural drawings with confidence.
When to Ask Questions
If a drawing is unclear, call the engineer. A five-minute phone call costs nothing. Building wrong costs time, money, and potentially compliance. Engineers are generally willing to clarify their drawings, and a builder who asks intelligent questions about the drawings demonstrates professionalism rather than incompetence.
