Building on the East Coast
The Gisborne region and the East Cape are among New Zealand’s most geographically isolated areas, with Gisborne City the largest settlement on a long, rugged coastline that has historically had limited connections to the rest of the country. For construction businesses operating in this environment, the isolation creates both challenges and competitive insulation — it’s harder to get materials in, but also harder for outside competitors to come in and undercut local contractors.
Gisborne’s construction market is small but active, with residential development, agribusiness facilities, and public sector infrastructure providing a pipeline of work. The Tairāwhiti region — the Māori rohe that covers the East Coast — has significant Māori land and community development activity that generates construction demand with distinctive procurement and community relationship requirements.
Cyclone Recovery Work
Like Hawke’s Bay, the Gisborne region was severely affected by Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023. Road damage on the remote stretches of the East Coast was catastrophic — State Highway 35, the main road around the East Cape, was closed for months, and many smaller roads and bridges remain under repair or reconstruction. The civil infrastructure recovery on the East Coast has been slower than in Hawke’s Bay, partly because of the logistical difficulty of working in such a remote environment.
For civil contractors with the capability to work in remote environments — the equipment, the self-sufficiency, the logistical planning — the East Coast recovery has provided substantial work. This is specialist territory that rewards adaptability and problem-solving over standard site setups.
Forestry and Agriculture
The Gisborne region has a large forestry industry — Tairāwhiti forests are among the largest planted forests in New Zealand — and the infrastructure associated with forestry: logging roads, bridges, skid sites, and processing facilities. For civil contractors and structural builders with forestry experience, this sector provides recurring work in the region.
